In the Studio with Martha Salazar, Squidkid Design

Squidkid Design

Hello everyone, my name is Martha Salazar and, as a mom, I love sewing and creating stuff for my little one. I recently launched SquidKid which is an online store where I share with other moms and their children all the things that I make.

Although my mother had a sewing shop at home when I was growing up and where I learnt all I know about sewing, I didn’t carry on with it. It wasn’t until 2007 when my daughter was born that I really got into sewing again.

Squidkid Design3Now, I do all my work at home between cooking meals, outings to the park, and attending all sorts of toddler lessons. I work from what I call “my studio” but it is really a very small closet where I keep my sewing machines. All the prep and other work that does not require any sewing gets done in my dinning table. And all my material keeps going in and out of a TV stand that is now a fabric stand. I have a 2 year old daughter, so I never get to work quietly. There’s always some craziness going on because she is very talkative, she loves telling stories, singing, dressing up, “reading” her books, and pretending she’s a squirrel.

Squidkid Design4I like working with fabrics that are fun and colorful. Every trip to the fabric store takes hours and I wish I could take most of the store with me. I try to “stick to the list” but it never really works. Quite often an idea pops up in my mind of something I want to create and right away I get to it. Sometimes it works great and sometimes not so much. Every time I create something new that I really love I post it online, so I’m constantly adding new items to my store.

I started selling on my etsy shop only, but I just finished my own website where you can buy from as well, and I also sell my items at local craft fairs and tradeshows.

Squidkid Design5I love working on SquidKid, I want to keep creating, learning, and growing. I’d like to add some handmade furniture, room décor, and wall art for children to my store.

Keep in touch visiting my website, by following me on Facebook or Twitter.

I think Buying Handmade is a great option. It means that every piece has been made with special care and it comes from someone’s unique work and creativity. Every piece tells you a bit of its maker, through their art you get to know the person who made it, and you can even get the story behind the products you buy. I enjoy browsing stores with handmade items, I always find something that makes me say either ‘That’s awesome!’ or ‘That’s weird!”.

I design and hand knit one-of-a-kind children’s hats. Do you this sort of product in your e-store?
