So, what’s your story? My story is quite simple. My entire life had been pointing in the direction of creativity and individualism. However, only recently did I realize that my life calling was staring right at me and had been since I was five years old (or even younger!). I have flashbacks of always enjoying art classes, crafts, creative projects, and as many after-school curricular activities possible. Yes, my two passions in life, English and art, have followed me everywhere, always tapping me on the shoulder saying hello. When I finally turned around to say hello back, I was greeted by such a state of “flow” — that’s what I like to call my zone of creativity and expression — that I knew I was on the right path.

How did you get started creating your artwork? Doodling. My drawings/illustrations are actually intricate doodles. There’s something so pleasurable about using fine point technical pens and literally exploring the space of a piece of paper. My ink and paper go with me almost everywhere, and since I do a bit of traveling, the end result of each image is a pure reflection of wherever my mind is at that time. So, to answer your question more directly, I have always been an artist of some kind since my first coloring book, my first art class in kindergarten, my first time sharpening a pencil… and working very diligently in various professional fields, obtaining as many life experiences as possible, all until I was able and willing to do it on my own. To start, you really just need to believe in yourself and the quality of your work.

Where does your inspiration come from? You, the sky, the sea, a story, a daydream, a whisper, generosity, my history, favorite words, mysteries, music, images, mishaps, inanimate objects, pets, laughs, quirks, cute moments, tree branch silhouettes, everything… love.

Where do you see yourself in five years? Living in a place where you’re allowed to put wallpaper on the walls, working in a studio with massive windows and great sun exposure, and having my work recognized by key players in both the art and handicrafts worlds. The question is, where do you see me in five years? It takes a whole, united, positive, creative collective to embrace and nurture those who have something to express and share. This is the part where I thank you for featuring me.

Where do you sell your work? The holy grail: Etsy!

Who is your favorite artist? Can I take one part Rene Magritte and one part Fernando Botero to make the ultimate super-artist? Well, I think I just did. These two have flooded my life with such happiness and inspiration, I thank them dearly.

What is your favorite song and by whom? Can I just tell you how deeply immersed I am with music? One song?! How about my dedicating a mini, five song playlist to this interview (that would make me most happy!): Grizzly Bear’s “Two Weeks” — not only is this song lyrically gorgeous, but every time I listen to it, I feel like I can accomplish anything. The Magnetic Fields’ “Strange Powers” — so uplifting. Buddy Holly’s “Learning the Game,” because this is what it’s all about. The Great Lake Swimmers’ “She Comes to Me In Dreams” — just beautiful. And of course one from Beirut: “My Wife, Lost in the Wild,” just because. Enjoy!

If you were stranded on a deserted island, with your family, what five things would you want to have with you? Hmm, I’ve had a long time to think about this question. I mean, it’s up there with “what’s the first thing you would do if you won a million dollars?” Both good questions. So, 1) a water filtration system 2) a slew of vegetable seedlings, including soybeans 3) a water-proof, solar-powered ipod thingy (with all my music, of course!) 4) a ton of paper, ink, and technical pens (with extra fine points!) and, 5) extremely earth-friendly/biodegradeable toilet paper!

Why do you think people should buy handmade? Whenever you choose to spend your money, please consider these factors: Where was the product made? By whom? Is the item unique? (meaning, was it something mass-produced in a factory somewhere, or did an individual or small group of creative individuals lovingly hand make the item?) What is the quality and originality of the item? Etc. You always have a choice, and whenever possible, I choose handmade, vintage, antique, or used. Your home should reflect you as a person — your little stories, adventures, travels, special findings. Each hand-selected, passed-down, or gifted item should be a meaningful piece of your home’s unique puzzle. I like to identify with the artisan, and it makes me proud to be that much closer to them and their work. I certainly support handmade because by supporting others, you are making a powerful statement that ultimately is supporting yourself and your craft. You must stand up for what you stand for.

Is there anything else you would like to share? I recently became swept up in the Twitter community and cordially invite anyone to follow me at: virginia___ (that’s 3 underscores!) Tweet you later!
